The first weekend at the lake should be about the water, not a weekend of chores. Here is a step-by-step checklist for opening a Michigan lake house or cottage for summer, and what you can hand off to a pro.
1. Walk the Property First
Before turning anything on, walk around the outside. Look for fallen limbs, roof or gutter damage, animal activity and signs of break-in. Inside, check ceilings and floors for water stains and look for droppings.
2. Turn the Water Back On
- Close drain valves and faucets opened during winterizing
- Turn on the main valve slowly and listen for running water
- Check under sinks, at the water heater and in the basement for leaks
- Refill and turn on the water heater
- Flush faucets to clear antifreeze from traps
3. Start Up the Sprinklers
Open the main slowly, check every zone and adjust heads. See our spring sprinkler start-up service.
4. Clean the Outside
- Soft wash the siding to remove winter grime and mildew
- Clean and restore the deck, and stain if water no longer beads
- Wash the driveway, walkways and patio
- Clean and inspect the grill
- Clean the gutters after spring seed drop
5. Yard and Beds
Rake out leftover leaves, cut back perennials, edge beds and add fresh mulch. See our spring cleanup service.
6. Safety Check
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Check deck railings and stairs. See signs of deck rot
- Inspect ladders, docks and boat lift hardware
