Michigan winters are hard on wood decks. Snow sits on boards for weeks, water freezes in cracks and shaded areas stay damp all spring. Over time that moisture leads to rot, and rot can make a deck unsafe. Here are the signs to look for and what to do about them.

8 Warning Signs of Deck Rot

  1. Soft or spongy boards. Press a screwdriver into the wood. If it sinks in easily, the wood is rotting.
  2. Dark, discolored areas that stay damp long after rain.
  3. Cracks and splits that go deep into boards, especially around nails and screws.
  4. Mushrooms, fungus or moss growing on or under the deck.
  5. Loose or wobbly railings. Railings must hold weight; any movement is a safety issue.
  6. Rusted or popped fasteners, joist hangers and brackets.
  7. Sagging or bouncy areas that suggest problems with joists or beams underneath.
  8. Damage at the ledger board, where the deck attaches to the house. This is the most common point of serious deck failures.

Where Rot Usually Starts

Check the ends of boards, stair stringers where they touch the ground, posts at soil level, and anywhere leaves and debris collect. Areas under planters and outdoor rugs are also common trouble spots.

Repair, Restore or Replace?

If rot is limited to a few deck boards or stair treads, those boards can be replaced and the rest of the deck restored. If you find rot in joists, beams, posts or the ledger, have the structure evaluated before using the deck. Learn about our deck restoration services.
