Wondering how often to stain a deck in Michigan? For most decks the answer is every two to three years, but Michigan’s freeze-thaw winters, humid summers and strong summer sun can shorten that schedule. Here’s how to tell when your deck is ready.
How Often to Stain a Deck: The Typical Schedule
- Transparent and toner stains: often every 1 to 2 years
- Semi-transparent stains: usually every 2 to 3 years
- Solid stains: can last longer on railings, but horizontal boards still wear faster
Decks in full sun, decks close to Lake Michigan and heavily used pool decks usually land on the shorter end of these ranges.
5 Signs Your Deck Needs Stain
- Water soaks in. Sprinkle water on the boards. If it darkens the wood instead of beading, the protection is gone.
- The wood is turning gray. Graying means UV light is breaking down the wood surface.
- Stain is peeling or flaking. This usually means a film-forming stain has failed and needs to be stripped.
- Green or black spots. That’s mold, mildew or algae. The U.S. EPA notes that mold grows wherever moisture lingers.
- Rough, splintery boards. Light sanding before re-staining brings them back.
When to Stain in Michigan
The best time is late spring through early fall, when the wood is fully dry and nights stay well above freezing. Avoid staining right after rain or when storms are in the forecast.
Make Your Stain Last Longer
- Sweep off leaves and debris so moisture doesn’t sit on the boards.
- Use a plastic shovel in winter and skip rock salt.
- Wash the deck every spring, even in years you don’t stain.
